The British IBM and Gimpy Software at the Play Expo

While at the Play Expo I Ran into the talented Adrian Killens who is One part of The British IBM a brilliant band which their website describes as.

"The British IBM was formed by retro enthusiast and singer-songwriter Aidy as a way of combining his two passions; indie rock and vintage computing. Joined by an innovative rhythm section featuring bassist David and drummer Paul, the trio have been performing and touring together for two years as 'Aidy' before The British IBM was officially born on the 1st January 2012."

Adrian not only introduced me to a great band with cool music but also My first experience with a classic Eight track machine (if you don't know what one of them is then Google it!). With a lot of The British IBM influence being Vintage Computing it seemed only appropriate to feature them on Crazy Horse Gaming and Aidy Kindly took the time out to talk to me about what he and the band have been up to. A section from one of their press releases best describes them.

"Even though some songs are loosely based on "retro computing" themes, The British IBM aren't a comedy or chip tune type band with songs about micro chips and commodore 64s etc. It’s more about the human story; what goes on behind the screens. The music is soft, vintage and visceral."

If you haven't herd of these guys before then now is your chance to discover them why not check out their Submission for the Weezer cruise competition? and don't forget to hit that thumbs up button.

"  Prior to forming The British IBM, Adrian has enjoyed success as a solo artist. Previous projects include releasing a single sold only on a 3.5” Floppy disc, and the 2010 'Song A Week' project which saw the artist releas a new song every Friday for an entire year. The result is a 53-track album, simply titled, 'Song A Week’ under his pseudonym ‘Aidy’. "

Now as the title suggests there is also a second part to this article about a game Studio called Gimpy Software, which is also another project Adrian is involved in  Gimpy software describes themselves as.

"Founded by three computer geeks from Cambridge and a professional animator from Barcelona, Gimpy Software are intent on doing their bit for the UK IT Industry. It’s no surprise that the hacker culture amongst kids today has vanished along with the BBC Micros and ZX Spectrums of yesteryear. Computer lessons in schools seem more intent on teaching pupils about spread sheets and no one really needs to know how a computer works on a technical level in order to play Call of Duty or update a Facebook status."

Their latest creation  Lunar Panda was on display at the Play Expo and I had a quick play around with it and it is quite an enjoyable little game even if I was terrible at it. The game gave me a  great Nostalgic feeling of  playing the classic title Lunar Lander when I was a Much smaller and less grey Gamer, Which is handy as that is what they creation of Lunar Panda  inspired from.

Gimpy Software's goal is to help kids and adults alike learn the basics of software coding through experimentation to see if they can help get people once again interested in learning programming code and who knows maybe bring a new generation of software enthusiasts back to the computing and gaming scene Teaching a skill and knowledge which a lot of people do not get the opportunity to learn any-more.

"In 2012 the Raspberry Pi was officially released with the intention of addressing some of these issues and getting kids coding again. When news of the Pi and what it was setting out to achieve hit Adrian Killens, Dean Edis and Andy Cardy decided they’d also contribute some of their time to the cause. All three work as IT Professionals and feel they owe a lot to their past experiences, experiences that kids today aren’t getting today. So after a lot of discussion they got together with artist Jose Cubero and began working on a Panda based video game for the Raspberry Pi.
The game is based on the classic seventies arcade hit Lunar Lander, in which the objective is to safely land a Jetpack wearing Panda on a randomly generated terrain. The game is completely free to download along with the complete source code and a tutorial from www.GimpySoftware.com. They hope to encourage people to take the source code and use it to learn through experimentation."

Why not check out Lunar Panda for your self see what you think .

Who says Computers Cannot be works of art?

So as some of you will be aware of, Crazy Horse Gaming took a quick trip down to Manchester recently to check out the Play Expo and while I was down there I saw loads of pretty cool stuff. One of the Exhibits at the expo that caught my attention was a Little known Computer called the Amiga Walker. Now many of you out there Especially some of the older generation of Gamers like myself will be very familiar with the Amiga brand of home computers and the Hours of awesome gaming that came with them. Sadly Amiga are not around any more to continue with the awesome line of  computers they  produced back in the 80S/90s. However there is one awesome person who has done his absolute best to keep the legacy of Amiga alive and Kicking and he has done a great job. Allow me to introduce you to Justin, Justin has made it a personnel goal to painstakingly build a working model of the last ever hpme computer Amiga planned on releasing which never made it to the general public the Amiga Walker,  Not only has he succeeded in his goal of  building what I consider to be a home computer that is a work of art but Justin is now on a mission to ensure as many Amiga enthusiasts get to see this true piece of Home computer and gaming history by heading to expos up and down the UK displaying the Amiga. Now enough rambling from me I will let Justin tell you more about Amiga and the Amiga Walker as he is the true expert here and can explain it to you guys far better than I ever could so Justin it is over to you.

"The Commodore Amiga was a late 1980s/early 1990s home computer. It featured 16 million on-screen colours; stereo sound and full multi-tasking. This was at a time when the PC was monochrome and the “sound system” was a series of beeps.
The Amiga proved to be a very popular machine throughout Europe, particularly in the UK. The original machine was the A1000 which was followed by the “home version” being the A500. The other machines released over the years were A2000; A3000; A1200; A4000 and the CD32. (There were other models including CDTV but the above were the internationally recognised “Amigas”.
"In the early 1990s Commodore realised, too late, that the A1200 had become too slow and so sought a more powerful user-friendly successor.
The planned successor, the Amiga walker was a prototype machine which was released in late 1995 early 1996 and was to feature the AAA chip set (64 bit; larger sprites; a chunky graphics mode – plus much, much more) and O3O Motorola processor.
Commodore/Escom asked the talented designer Daniel Gilgen to come up with some initial case designs. The design finally approved initially received a very poor public reception, being likened to Darth Vader’s helmet, a vacuum cleaner, or Dr Who’s K9."

"The case design was revolutionary and a few years ahead of its time (think of the I-Mac that was released a few years later to popular acclaim).
The Walker case was designed with the option for future upgrades. There was a tower system designed, which the Walker would sit upon thus giving access to a wide range of add-on cards.
Unfortunately Escom/Commodore went bankrupt before the Walker went on general release.
It is generally believed that there are three Walker cases in existence - two are in private collections and one in the public domain. As I thought that it was a shame that no-one would ever get the chance to see or use one of these machines....... I decided there needed to be a fourth.........
So I embarked on 'Project Amiga Walker'.
The Project took approximately seven months and was designed using the original specifications. The curvature of the case proved very difficult to replicate. It was decided to use aluminium as it is strong and quite easy to work with.
The complicated feet and front and rear panels were made on a CNC machine (with many thanks to Brian Ferguson).
The upper parts of the case were manufactured from 1mm aluminium sheeting and welded together then dressed back by hand (with thanks to Jerry Roe).

The final preparation of the case was carried out by an automotive body-shop as black shows every defect."

Early stages of the Amiga Walkers creation.

"The machine is powered by an Intel dual core E6600 on a Fujitsu motherboard with a custom PSU.
The system boots using the original Amiga Walker Kickstart ROM and the original hard drive images and to finally see an Amiga Walker booting as originally intended was a great feeling."

Shots of the internal make up of the walker and the boot up screen.

"When I later discovered that the Walker design rights are still owned by Klaus Schwagerl I realised I needed to contact him to obtain his permission in respect of the intellectual property rights.
After lengthy email correspondence and upon providing detailed specifications and photographs Klaus very kindly allowed this Amiga Walker to be officially licensed for private use and shows only.
At the Retro Replay 2013 Manchester Event I finally unveiled the Amiga Walker. It received an excellent reception generating a great deal of interest. To see the smiles on the faces of Amiga enthusiasts made the seven months of hard work seem all worthwhile."

More shots of the unit powered up and running and final shots of the finished unit.

"This licensed Amiga Walker will now go to as many shows as I am able to attend in order that as many enthusiasts as possible get to experience the Amiga Walker in the flesh.
If you would like to learn more about this project and follow the original build please go to:

So folks that is the Amiga Walker in my opinion one of the coolest looking Home Computer I have ever seen and Justin has done a great job building this working piece of gaming and computing history.

I would like to give a big Thank you to Justin and his wife for taking the time out to spend with Crazy Horse Gaming and for taking the time to send all the photos and Info regarding the creation of the Amiga Walker so Thank you so much to the both of you .
Please Visit www.amibay.com and show your support for the Amiga Walker and its continuous journey from expo to expo its a great project and a real pleasure to see out there keep up the good work guys.

The Walking Dead: Game of the Year Edition

Fans of the game, TV series and for those who have not played it yet, you soon have a new reason to pick up and play the The Walking Dead game, a game of the year edition looks like its on the way.
Spotted over on the ESRB site, a listing has appeared for the game. It can be presumed that the game of the year edition will included all five episodes of The Walking Dead, and then the the additional 400 Days of Summer DLC.

The game is listed for Mac, PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360.

Telltale's point and click adventure is the best video game representation of The Walking Dead in my opinion, and also makes for a great, and very gripping, game. If the game of the Year Edition is indeed coming, it should be the perfect opportunity to pick up the full game and give it a go.

The first episode for Telltale's latest game, The Wolf Among Us, is out now.

Nintendo Confident of Thrid Party Support

The Xbox One and PS4 are just around the corner, but whilst excitement builds for them, don't forget about another console already out, the Wii U. The Wii U has not been doing to well with sales since its launch, and this may largely be down to a lack of third party titles. With the new Xbox and Play Station just over a month away, its not looking like it will get any better, but despite this Nintendo seems to remain confident in their console. Speaking with Forbes, Scott Moffitt, Nintendo’s EVP of Sales & Marketing for Nintendo of America, stated that 'We’re confident that we have the games necessary—both first- and third-party—to have a strong holiday season and expand the audience for Wii U'. Its a viscous circle, the reason people may be not by buying the Wii U is because of the lack of third party games, then these game fail to come to the console because of the lack of sales. Hopefully through Nintendo can turn these slow sales around. Besides having an, in my opinion, amazing line up of exclusives, such as Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, the Mario games, Super Smash Bros and Pikmin, they do have a few third party games on the way this holiday season, such as Batman: Arkham Origins, Watch Dogs, Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag and Call of Duty Ghosts. Their not missing out on everything then.

Deus Ex: Universe announced

Deus Ex fans be excited, for a new game, or possibly games, is on the way. Announced today by Eidos Montreal, Deus Ex: Universe is a new announcement that is set to contain a connected and expanding world that will be set across a series of games.

Universe is looking like the collective name for a new series of Deus Ex games then, 'It’s a commitment on our part to deliver meaningful content that expands the franchise on a regular basis and to deliver a deep conspiracy that will span several connected Deus Ex games'. With a rich world to take from and the power of next gen, this could be an interesting one to watch, but personally the promise of an expanding world is what make this stand out to me, especially if its a world I want to delve into and stay in.

Deus Ex: Universe is in production for PC, Xbox One and PS4, but with games and other media also being promised such as a game for smartphones or a graphic novel for example.

Take a look at the first concept art image released below, showing A 'trans-humanism segregation', an environment in which the different classes of people are separated. The game is in early development so it might be a while before more is shown off.

Tom Clancy dies aged 66

Tom Clancy the espionage and military novelist famous for titles such as Splinter Cell has passed away in a Baltimore hospital on Tuesday night, aged just 66 his publisher has confirmed. Tom Clancy became a house hold name thanks to titles 'Red October' and 'Patriot Games' which went on to make Hollywood blockbusters. In 1996 Clancy co-founded Red Storm Entertainment which was famous for their release of Rainbow Six before later being acquired by Ubisoft. Since Ubisoft's purchase the Tom Clancy brand went on to make highly successful game series such as Ghost Recon. What remains to be seen is whether Ubisoft can continue to associate the name to their games with 'The Division' set for release on PS4, Xbox One and PC in 2014.

XBOX exclusive DLC announced for 'The Bureau'

2K Marin has announced 'The Bureau: XCOM Declassified' first DLC pack which will be released exclusively on Xbox 360. The Story takes place shortly after the events of the first game, just before the alien invasion starts. Players will be in control of Agent Da Silva who has volunteered for a series of psychic experiments.

The DLC's lead designer said this in a blog:
"Agent DaSilva and his squad are treated with an elerium-based compound gas in order to visualize and combat the mental defenses of another agent infected with the Sleepwalker pathogen.
"Delivering a tactical, tense, and rewarding experience meant cranking up the difficulty. But don't despair - we gave you lots of goodies to play with. DaSilva's got a new series of powers and perks based on his 'plant and trigger' bomb abilities in the level Signal from Beyond.
"You can choose between those and some of Agent Carter's old standbys in your upgrade path. There's enough experience to level up a couple of agents of every class, so you can mix and match and see what combo is really your style. Ammo and weapons are plentiful - including a new AK-47 and a prototype Microwave Gun that cooks enemies from the inside out."
Hangar 6 R&D downloadable content for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified is available worldwide exclusively on the Xbox 360 for $4.99/£6.99 starting October 8, 2013.

Killzone Shadow Fall 50 Gigabytes

I have downloaded a lot of big games in the past onto my consoles, in terms of memory size, but I think this tops the majority of them put together, Killzone Shadow Fall will comes in at a 50GB download for the PS4 if your purchasing it digitally.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Sony UK boss Fergal Gara stated the size of Shadow Fall was 'cracking on for 50GB' but also highlighted the download as you play feature. As the name suggests, the feature allows you to start playing a game whilst its being downloaded, a good thing as It might take a while to download.

Although I mainly purchase hard copies of the games I play, I am increasingly choosing to buy games digitally, but if Killzone: Shadow Fall is at 50GB then its one game I will be buying on disk. My curiosity now turns to the memory size of other next gen games, and whether they will be as big as, or bigger, than Shadow Fall in terms of memory.
